Gartner states that data governance is the specification and accountability of decision rights to ensure acceptable behavior in the valuation, generation and consumption of data and analytics.
Data governance ensures data is accessible, secure, and usable. Data governance also allows businesses to make better data analytics and reach informed decisions. Data governance can also improve data consistency, eliminate redundancies, and help in making sense out of junk data. This can save an organisation from major decision-making difficulties.
Benifits
Data governance also benefits organizations as they: Consistency in data Management expenses have been reduced. Increased data availability for all involved in order to make data-driven decisions. Enhanced employee experience (higher engagement level and Productivity). Customer experience is improved by 360-degree views that allow for tailored experiences at scale. This allows for quicker insights into consumer behavior/patterns and Brand value.
Why Data Governance?
Data is the new currency of digital era. Data within businesses is growing at an exponential rate. 90% of the data we have today was created in the past two years. Unstructured data will make up 80% of all data by 2025. This data explosion has multiplied the size of organizations and issues by ten.
Data can only be of real business value if the company understands it.
What data are available within the organization?
Who owns the data?
Who has access?
What are the ethical and proper uses of the Data?
Data tracing (traceability and use of data in solutions)
Data duplication is another possibility
Data quality and shared taxonomy
Compliance and data capture security are also important.
How and where is the data saved or archived? (and the overall lifespan of data).
